Between Fall of 1972 and Fall of 1991, the Shepaug Valley Archaeological Society and then its outgrowth, the American Indian Archaeological InstituteFrom its founding until being renamed in 1991, IAIS was called the American Indian Archaeological Institute. The name change occurred due to a shift in focus away from solely archaeology and towards archaeology in conjuction with education. published the periodical known as Artifacts to keep members and interested parties up to date on recent archaeological findings, as well as the status of the museum. Artifacts became an eagerly-awaited publication and the valuable information contained within was one of the reasons that IAIS attracted members from all across the country.
